Our Competition Winner Sunnyfields Primary's Outdoor Classroom

At Cabins for Schools, we don’t just build outdoor classrooms and log cabins, we build long-term partnerships with schools and educational settings across the UK. We also love to see how each of our learning spaces are used long after installation. That’s why earlier this year, we launched a special competition for schools who had already invested in one of our cabins. Read our story with Sunnyfields Primary School...

Our project with Sunnyfields Primary

Our school buildings are designed to be versatile, so we love checking in with our schools and educators to see how their building has transformed learning and support, and find out all the different ways they are utilising the space. We wanted to support and celebrate the wide range of educational settings we have worked with across the UK who are using their eco school rooms and log cabins in impactful ways. So, we launched a competition open to our owners of a Cabins for Schools building where they could win £500 worth of book vouchers from The Book Bus, an organisation who are local to us who offer affordable books to increase children's access to reading. This was our way of saying thank you, and of giving something back to our schools.

We announced our winning school - the wonderful Sunnyfields Primary School in Scawthorpe, Doncaster. We originally installed an outdoor classroom in a woodland area of the primary school's grounds back in March 2022. Our team had worked closely with the school to design a bespoke 8m x 4m classroom in hybrid cedar cladding which would create extra learning and support space while making the most of the school's natural surroundings.

“From the initial stages, Cabins for Schools worked closely with us to deliver our vision, ensuring the project remained within budget without compromising on quality,” says Emma, the school business manager at Sunnyfields.
“The team’s dedication meant that the cabin was not only completed on time but was ready to use immediately - a seamless experience from start to finish.”

Outdoor classrooms built to last

All of our educational buildings are designed to be used and enjoyed all year round, and Sunnyfields' outdoor classroom is no exception. Constructed with high-quality, durable materials, we created a learning space to handle Yorkshire's changing seasons with ease.

“The cabin itself has exceeded all expectations. Its quality has stood the test of time through extreme weather conditions, from scorching summers to freezing, wet winters, and it still looks as pristine as it did on the day of installation. The structure has truly proven to be a durable, long-lasting investment."

Three years on, the primary's outdoor classroom continues to provide an essential space for a wide range of support sessions and extracurricular activities. From forest school to yoga sessions, it's a multipurpose space for all year groups across the school to use.

“Our woodland cabin has transformed our outdoor area into an incredible extension of the classroom, offering a versatile and inspiring learning environment,” says Emma. “It has been the hub of a wide array of activities and events, such as Yoga Classes, Forest School, Wellbeing Writing Sessions, Santa’s Grotto at Christmas, and School Community Days, to name just a few. Its charm and functionality have enriched our pupils' learning experiences in countless ways.”

Supporting the wider community

We love hearing about our Cabins for Schools buildings being used to strengthen community ties and having a wider impact than just on the students and staff at that school. Something that we appreciate about Sunnyfields is how they've welcomed other schools to use their outdoor classroom, to share outdoor learning provisions with settings who have fewer resources available to them to offer quality outdoor learning.

“The ‘wow’ factor of the cabin is undeniable, impressing visitors and sparking joy in everyone who steps inside. We have even had the privilege of sharing this remarkable facility with other schools in our city, particularly those with fewer resources for outdoor education. It has been heart-warming to see the positive impact it has had not only on our own pupils but also on the wider community.”

We couldn’t be more proud to see how this outdoor learning space project has continued to grow and evolve with the school. Sunnyfields have taken their outdoor classroom and turned it into something that not only supports their own students but lifts others along the way! With their £500 worth of book vouchers, the school decided to create an outdoor reading area for the pupils to enjoy during lunch times. Sarah, community champion for Sunnyfields, told us that she worked with a group of pupils (their reading ambassadors) to select the books that the children really wanted. Now, they can access a space where they can sit, relax and enjoy reading for pleasure in their free time at lunch or break.

“We feel incredibly fortunate for the opportunities this cabin has brought our children, enabling them to enjoy the great outdoors every day, regardless of the weather. The cabin is more than just a building - it is an inspiring space that fosters creativity, wellbeing, and connection. Thank you once again for bringing this vision to life. We are proud to showcase our cabin as a testament to the exceptional quality and service provided by Cabins for Schools.”

At Cabins for Schools, we create fully insulated, all-weather learning spaces that support everything from 1-1 interventions to whole class learning, forest school, SEN support, and much more. We know that school budgets are tight and demands are high. That's why we do everything we can to deliver flexible, high-quality spaces that offer real long-term value. Supporting our schools long after installation is a big part of who we are, and we’re so proud to see schools like Sunnyfields Primary making the most of their classroom every single day.
